However, the concept of surveying in schools remains relatively undeveloped. There have always been surveys, mainly to do with impending Ofsted visits or in times of relative pressure. But in todays fast paced, social media driven environment it is imperative to know what your influencers think and be able to respond effectively and appropriately.

Whilst writing the last few blogs I have tried to, and probably failed to convey the condition of modern teaching as I see it. That can often be somewhat doom-ridden with daily reports of crisis, recruitment deficits, and a general atmosphere of malaise.

After qualifying from my PGCE I remember vividly the scramble for jobs around Easter and the constant surveying of the TES and the conversations surrounding schools, areas, relocation etc.

There has been some amazing work done in the increased awareness of mental health for children in the last 5 years. A cursory search on the net will bring up international, national, regional, local and school-based initiatives all aimed at increasing what we should know and what to about mental health issues relating to students.

I recently found this article by Michelle Hackman and Eric Morath and although it is from “across the pond” the fact that it is in the Wall Street Journal and reflects trends that are frighteningly current in the UK just adds to the growing concern that the teaching profession and jobs associated with education are in an historically difficult time.
